Pedestrian Struck by Car, Killed While Crossing Road in Egg Harbor Township, NJ

Law enforcement is hoping that the public may be able to assist them with their investigation into a fatal pedestrian accident on a roadway in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

The deadly hit-and-run accident went down at 1:30 a.m. on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The victim was walking across the Black Horse Pike, just west of Fox Place, when a motor vehicle plowed into him. The car that struck the victim did not stop to offer assistance. Moreover, the driver reportedly failed to dial 911 to alert police about the accident.

Other motorists saw the victim lying on the road and contacted local law enforcement, which immediately dispatched police officers and emergency medical responders to the scene. Tragically, the victim died before he could be transported to a hospital.

Shortly after law enforcement and emergency crews arrived at the scene of the crash, police closed down part of Black Horse Pike in both directions so that officers could investigate and gather evidence.

It has been three weeks since the fatal auto accident, but Egg Harbor Township police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian. Egg Harbor Township detectives have been working to get a description of the car. However, authorities have not yet been able to identify the motor vehicle, despite their best efforts to review video surveillance footage from the surrounding area.

Investigators actually believe that the victim may have been hit by two cars, so Egg Harbor police are searching for two drivers.

The reality is that pedestrian accidents are far too common on roads in New Jersey. Many of these accidents prove fatal for the pedestrians because they are not protected by the shell of a car. Across the United States, more than 5,000 people die annually after being struck by an automobile in pedestrian accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Depending on the circumstances, the family members of the victim in a pedestrian accident may be able to file a wrongful death claim to get compensation, and some measure of justice, for their loss.
